New York Newsday Man Robs 2 Banks, Leaves Cellphone

Police were searching for a man who robbed two banks and attempted a third stickup in a 30-minute span Friday, then, after making his getaway in a livery cab, left his cellular phone and leather jacket in a bodega.

Police sources said the man first robbed the Chase Manhattan Branch at 111-18 Liberty Ave. in Richmond Hill just after 11 a.m. He made off with several hundred dollars, the sources said.

He then traveled to a nearby Bank of New York at 103-48 Lefferts Blvd. and showed a note to a teller stating he was armed and demanding money. When that teller was slow to respond, the man became nervous and left empty-handed, police sources said.

At about 11:30 a.m., the robber went next-door to a North Fork Bank at 103-42 Lefferts Blvd. and passed his robbery demand note to a teller who gave him $2,623, police said.

The man fled that bank in a livery cab. The driver became suspicious because the man appeared nervous and was overly concerned about police cars that passed them with their lights and sirens on responding to the robberies, police sources said.

The man asked to be dropped off at a bodega at 112th Street and 101st Avenue. After the man got out of the car, the driver flagged down a patrol car and told them about the suspicious man.

The officers found a jacket with a cellular phone in it inside the store, police sources said. Friday night the detectives were still attempting to track down the robber, the sources said.
