Star Tribune Somebody's shooting at cell phone towers in Mower County
By StarTribune, AP
03/01/2003

AUSTIN, Minn. -- Mower County authorities were looking for whoever has been disrupting cell phone service in southeastern Minnesota by shooting at cell phone transmission towers.

A technician for Midwest Wireless inspected a tower near Elkton after customers reported poor reception Dec. 18 and 19, and discovered that a cable had been shot twice.

Authorities said the damage was caused by a weapon larger than a .22-caliber rifle.

A similar incident was reported at a Midwest Wireless tower near Lansing in late November. The vandalism affected cell phone reception, but did not knock out service entirely.

Damage in each incident was estimated at $10,000.
