MOBILE PHONE RECOVERY IN AUSTRALIAFind a phone
August 29, 2002

Australian network operators offer users to "register" their mobiles. All GSM networks have been capable of tracking stolen phones since the networks were launched in the early 1990s, but only now operators are starting to do something. They are making users to register, instead of doing it automatically themselves. Users must register their 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identification (IMEI) code on the Find A Phone [originally www.findaphone.com.au now redirected] web site.

From the Find a Phone web site: "There are approximately 11 million mobile phone owners in Australia. 4,000 of these mobile phones are lost / stolen every week. Find A Phone provides a nationwide recovery service, that is available to ALL mobile phone owners. Find A Phone is notified daily of 'recovered' mobile phones, and makes every attempt to contact the rightful owner.

ALL mobile phones can be listed on the 'owners' database, whether they be lost/stolen or presently in your possession, GSM or CDMA, and it does not matter which network/service provider you use, as you are responsible for listing your details."

"Telstra is introducing IMEI blocking in August, with Optus and Vodafone to follow later in the year. This means that from August any reported lost/stolen mobile phone will not be able to be used on the Telstra network. Many mobile phones will become inactive, increasing the rate of recovery. It is very important that you REGISTER your details on the FAP website, so that you can be contacted when your mobile phone is recovered. For further information regarding IMEI blocking please contact the appropriate network."
